Downloading and copying installation files
From FreeWay
The first step of the installation is downloading the installation files from the Freeway website: http://www.openfreeway.org/download.html.
The download page offers the installation files in two formats (tar.gz and zip):
- freeway_1_4_2_197.tar.gz – click on any of the 3 mirror links to download installation files in gz.tar format
- freeway_1_4_2_197.zip – click on any of the 3 mirror links to download installation files in gz.tar format
Once you click on any of the mirror links, the download dialog window will be displayed.
Click OK and proceed to choosing the location for downloading the file. Once the installation package has been downloaded to your PC you can use one of these 3 approaches:
- If you have SSH (root) access to your server just use wget to get the file. All you need is the URL. The command will be something like "wget http://launchpad.net/openfreeway/1.5/1.5beta/+download/openfreeway_1_5_0_234.zip", without the quotes. Then you can just use "unzip filename", on Linux, anyway, to unzip the archive.
- Move the file and extract the archive directly on your server
This is the easier, and more reliable method, and saves both disk space on your computer, time, and
Internet bandwidth. Most web hosting control panels like cPanel and Virtualmin have tools that will let you
upload and extract a compressed archive directly on the server.
- Extract the archive and move the contents of the “freeway” folder to your server
This will require transferring a lot of files, any one of which may be lost in transit by your FTP program. If possible, uncompress the file on the server directly. This will eliminate hard-to-identify problems arising from failed or corrupted file transfers.
Important note:
The location you choose for placing the installation file decides the URL you will use for starting the installation procedure:
- e.g. www.yourserver.com/install if you move the files to the root directory
- or www.yourserver.com/folder_name/install in case you have placed the files to any other subdirectory
This location will also determine the URL for accessing both front end and back end of your Freeway application
- e.g. www.yourserver/admin/ in case you have installed the application to the root directory
- or www.yourserver.com/folder_name/admin in case you have installed to any other subdirectory
