The project

Is the freeway project still alive? There hasn't been any updates that I can see from the developers, so it appears dead. Curious as I am looking at building a store, like freeway, but hesitant since it appears to be dead.

I have been on and off of this board for about 8 months hoping that this software wasn't dead. Here is what I would say to you if you want to use this software. You MUST have extensive PHP experience and the ability to work with other people's code. Third party developers do not want to touch this code even for money.

There is minimal support as you can tell from the few responses you can find on the board. I have yet to find a commercial release of this software anywhere except where the author of OpenFreeway did himself.

I'm sure there is enough of us that are willing to pay for this software for them to put developers on it, but that hasn't happened. The promise is always that they are busy at the moment and they will release something in the future. I would prefer they spend a little time and fix their existing bugs and create a new release containing those fixes rather than working on the next big port (if that is what they are doing).

Bottom line, pick something else or be prepared to spend a LOT of time debugging the code and never 100% trust it.

Thanks, that is essentially what I figured. Even on the home page for the project they state that the project is on Launchpad, but when you go there the last activity is close to a year old. A PM to Damian, one of the developers has gone unanswered, so I figured that the project is completely dead.

It's unfortunate. OpenFreeway had many nice features and a nice interface. I found another Open source cart, built on the OSC framework but being reworked that has real promise and is under current development. I will likely build a cart using some lesser software until this other cart is out of alpha.

I received an email from Damian at zac-ware and he said the Open Freeway project is not dead; the team had been working on another project, Jenta, and should be able to focus on Freeway again.

Good to hear that you have heard from Damian. Unfortunately, they have been telling people that for almost 6 months. I began looking at this software last April / May. They were saying that they were working on another project and would return to this soon. Actually I believe they said they would have a release by Sept. / Oct.

It isn't that I don't believe that they are working on something else. I most defintely believe that. The actual issue is that there is no way of knowing when they might return to this project and actually be working on it. And know when some other project will pull them off of it again.

Their last release contains several bugs that haven't been updated in a while. I find the release unusable out of the box. If you don't have a developer to work on it, don't bother with the install.

All that negative said, I really want this to work because it would save me a few thousand dollars a year on software that I have to pay for currently. That is why I would be willing to pay for someone to get the bugs out.

You can tell from all of the phone ads in the forum and poor quality release that this team isn't able to commit to this project. While it might not be dead in their eyes because they are "coming back to it", I consider a project that gets shelved for several months on end without any level of predictability a dead project.
